Nine Year 10 students from the Construction course at Sir William Stanier School, Crewe attended the Chartered Institute of Housing’s 2010 conference and exhibition at Harrogate International Centre.
The students, who were selected to reward their outstanding achievements, were accompanied by their tutors and staff from local affordable homes provider, Wulvern, who sponsor the Construction course and who organised the trip. They spent the day touring the exhibition, meeting international delegates and listening to speakers from all fields of the housing industry.
Student, Andrew Greenwood, aged 15 said “It was fun, interesting and interactive. I learned a lot about myself and I’m more confident than I was before the trip.”
Construction course tutor, Mr Andrews added “The conference gave the students a valuable insight into how construction plays its part away from the classroom. They found lots of relevant information relating to topics that are covered in the course and forged links with companies from around the world which will open up vast opportunities.”
Wulvern’s Regeneration Officer, Jan Melia explains “As part of the course sponsorship, Wulvern provide tools, overalls and equipment. Many of the students have also enjoyed on-site work experience with Cruden Construction, a contractor that is currently working on Wulvern’s multi-million pound regeneration scheme on the Sherborne Road estate, Crewe.
Jan added “We are also running a course for adults offering DIY and basic maintenance, bricklaying, plumbing and joinery.”
The course starts in September and Wulvern will fund places for interested customers. Please contact Jan Melia on 01270 506200 for more details.
