A community centre in Crewe has received a makeover thanks to a team of youngsters on the Prince’s Trust personal development programme and a partnership of organisations who are involved in regenerating the area.
The team of thirteen 16 to 23-year-olds from the Cheshire Prince's Trust Team 29 took on the challenge to spruce up the Gresty Community Centre on Brookhouse Drive, which is used for a diverse range of activities including pensioners' clubs, exercise classes, youth and after school clubs and toddler groups.
The three-week refurbishment project included garden landscaping and decoration reinvigorating the well used community facility.
The Centre is provided by local affordable housing provider Wulvern and groundworks contractor G B Davies provided materials, expertise and work placements for the team.
Prince’s Trust leader Isobel Sykes was instrumental in organising the team. She said: “The team have worked extremely hard to complete the project in three weeks and I am very proud of their achievements. I hope the Centre can now be used to its full potential.”
Jeff Smith, Chair of Gresty Community Group, commented: “We were delighted that the Prince’s Trust selected our project to work on. The Centre has been given a new lease of life and will be enjoyed by all the community.”
Member of the team and Wulvern customer, Natasha Vyse, said “The programme has given me the opportunity to learn new skills which will help me in my job search. I have already been able to give examples of work experience at interviews.”
The team members were joined by their families, partner organisations and representatives of those groups who use the facility to celebrate the grand opening and enjoy refreshments provided by Cheshire East.
